Anyone who went hiking before the days of the smart phone will remember the beautifully folded USGS topo maps. They show contour lines for the entire US, as well as just about every school, campground, boat ramp, creek, pond and cemetary.
A zoomed out view gives an impression of land use, population density and vegetation. A zoomed in view shows every neighborhood street or just about every forest creek.
For many users the USGS Topo maps serve as an authoritative source. For example, the boundary of a park as displayed on Google is not authoritative for a real estate agreement, while the USGS Topo map is much more likely to hold weight.
